Tokyo Station

Tatsuno Kingo's Marunouchi building opened in 1914. A May 1945 air raid burned out its domes and much of the third floor, and the postwar repair left it two storeys high; a restoration completed in 2012 rebuilt both. Stand under the north or south dome and look up: an eagle with outspread wings in each of the eight corners, and eight of the twelve zodiac animals. The Tokyo Station Hotel, which opened here in 1915, and the Tokyo Station Gallery, which hangs art against the original brick, are both inside.
